Installing WinImages

WinImages R7 may be installed in machines with previous WinImages installations. The directory structure is quite different from the R4 release or earlier, and care should be taken not to place the new WinImages installation in the same locations as the old, or the old installation will be lost or damaged. The new installation will succeed, however.

If the WinImages R7 installation is allowed to proceed with its default selections, it will not interfere with previous WinImages installations except that the .INI files for the old installations will reflect new directory choices and so forth as you use the software. If you wish to replace a previous WinImages installation, you must change the new installation directory structure to point at the previous directory structure (this is not the default.)

All example projects and data files are adjusted at install time to reflect the directory structure used by the installation. This ensures that all sample projects work as designed.

The WinImages R7 installation follows most of Microsoft®'s recommendations about locations for program files and other application components. However, these choices can be modified during installation if needed.

One exception to this is that WinImages R7 uses a mechanism that produces ".ini" files, not the operating system "registry" to store its program settings. For this reason, WinImages R7 can be installed, and/or removed, without any risk to your other system settings or other applications. This also means that WinImages R7 starts up considerably faster than applications that use the registry. As you may have gathered, we're not too impressed with Microsoft®'s implementation of the registry!

The WinImages R7 installation software locates the predefined locations on your computer for program files, the windows system directory, and the windows directory. On an NT or Windows 2000 system, these names will vary from those shown above, but they will be the proper locations for that type of system.
